Taiwan has a large population that frequently dines out, leading to widespread use of paper tableware. However, after use, these paper utensils often become contaminated with residues and grease. Many people inadvertently dispose of these used paper utensils by mixing them with regular paper for recycling or simply throwing them away as trash. Did you know? This careless action contributes to an increase in waste.

The Resource Circulation Department of the Environmental Protection Administration reminds us that used paper tableware (cups, plates, bowls) should not be mixed with regular paper for recycling or treated as regular garbage.

The department explains that paper tableware is coated with a layer of polyethylene (PE) or treated with wax for waterproofing, grease resistance, and convenience during production. After recycling, these items are sent to specialized waste paper processing plants. There, the paper pulp is recycled to produce other paper products, while the plastic film can be recycled into plastic pellets. To improve recycling quality, individuals can wipe off food residues from used paper tableware with napkins to reduce pest breeding, then sort waste, paper tableware, and food waste separately. Finally, they can stack the paper tableware neatly and hand it over to cleaning crews or recyclers for recycling.

The department urges the public to adopt the simple “Clean, Sort, Stack” approach after dining out: wiping with napkins, cleaning residues, sorting for recycling, and stacking for neatness, before handing them over to cleaning crews or recyclers. They also encourage individuals to cultivate habits such as bringing their own tableware, choosing restaurants that provide environmentally friendly utensils, and reducing the use of paper tableware. If paper tableware must be used, proper sorting and resource recycling should be practiced to avoid treating recyclable materials as trash.
